Trivia

Lake Tahoe is one of the clearest lakes in the world

You can often see more than 60–70 feet below the surface thanks to its remarkable water purity. Its clarity is carefully protected through ongoing environmental conservation efforts that help preserve its stunning blue color.

It’s the second-deepest lake in the United States

Reaching a depth of 1,645 feet — deep enough to completely submerge the Empire State Building. This incredible depth helps regulate the lake’s temperature year-round.

Lake Tahoe never fully freezes

Despite heavy snowfall in winter, because of its massive depth and volume of water. Even in the coldest months, the lake’s deep waters retain enough heat to prevent a complete freeze.

The lake straddles two states

California and Nevada — and was formed over 2 million years ago through a combination of faulting and glacial activity. Today, visitors can easily explore both sides of the lake in a single scenic drive.
